BISHOP OSWALD JOSEPH LEWIS BISHOP OSWALD J. LEWIS: (2005 - 2023) The first Bishop of Jaipur, Most Rev. Oswald Lewis, was born on July 30, 1944, ordained priest on December 30, 1972 for the Diocese of Lucknow and was appointed as the Co-adjutor Bishop Meerut on April 16, 1998. Bishop Oswald, during his long priestly ministry in Lucknow, held varied and important assignments in pastoral, educational and administrative areas. He was the Parish Priest of the Cathedral, Principal of Schools, Vicar General and Administrator of the Diocese of Lucknow. He was for over 12 years Secretary of the Association of Catholic Education Institutions in U.P. (1985-1997) at the end of which he was given the “Bharat Jyoti” Award for ‘Best Educationist’ by the Governor of U.P.
On 20th July, 2005 His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI named him as the first bishop of Jaipur Diocese which was then bifurcated from its mother diocese Ajmer. He was installed on 28th August, 2005 at Our lady of the Annunciation Cathedral, Malviya Nagar, Jaipur. He served the diocese for almost 18 years. During his tenure as bishop of the diocese he worked for the upliftment of the poor and marginalized in the society. He showed special interest in spreading quality education across Jaipur diocese. He brought up new mission stations along with the establishment of other major institution in the diocese.
His Holiness Pope Francis accepted his resignation in 2023 and again he was appointed as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Ajmer on 19th March, 2024.
